Grand Canyon (Maverick Helicoptors)

To see the Grand Canyon from a helicopter is a wonderful experience. This photo was taken from an EC0-Star helicopter operated at the South Rim by Maverick Helicopters. One minute we were skimming the treetops of a Ponderosa Pine forest, the next the canyon dropped away beneath us – a mile below. The Colorado River, which rises in the Rocky Mountains and threads southwest to the Gulf of California, threads the length of the Canyon.

Horses and blue sky

Visitors to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon pass through a small town called Tusayan near the entrance to Grand Canyon National Park. At a tourist stop that includes Sophie’s Mexican Kitchen and Jennifer’s Coffeehouse & Bakery this striking creation sits in a parking lot. Yes, a parking lot. A slightly lower camera angle would show an entirely different scene. This magnificent creation against the blue October sky remains one of the most memorable images from our travels in Arizona.

Phoeniz sunrise
